Goldberg Variations
In 2009, the duo Tal & Groethuysen published a CD on the Sony Classical label with a rather surprising version of the famous Goldberg Variations by J.S. Bach. In 1883, the composer and organist Joseph Gabriel Rheinberger had arranged Bach’s original music for two keyboards (in other words for two pianists) and in places had also composed complementary material – in accordance with the spirit and taste of the Romantic period, of course. In the early 20th century, the all-round genius Max Reger frequently played this work at concerts and used the experience gained thereby to incorporate new ideas in this version and make slight alterations. In the recording the duo now play their own blend of the two versions.
In a workshop within the framework of the Ruhr Piano Festival the duo discussed the work and these versions with pupils and students from the German federal state of North Rhine Westphalia. Two extracts from the workshop can be viewed here.
